Threading vs Waxing: An Honest Comparison

Which is better for your brows? Here’s the fair, no-hype breakdown from our Mountain View studio.

If you’re deciding between threading and waxing for your eyebrows, you’re not alone — it’s one of the questions we hear most at the studio. Both remove hair from the root and both keep brows tidy for weeks, so the honest answer isn’t “one is always right.” It’s about your skin, your features, and the finish you want. Here’s how they really compare.

How each method works

Threading uses a single twisted cotton thread that a skilled artist rolls across the skin to catch and lift each hair out at the root — no product touches your face at all. Waxing spreads warm wax over the area, then removes it with a strip, pulling hair away in one motion. Both are effective; the difference is in how much control and how much contact your skin gets along the way.

How long does each one last?

This is often a tie. Because both pull from the root, most people enjoy clean brows for about 3–4 weeks before a touch-up, with regrowth coming in soft and even either way. If longevity is your only question, threading and waxing are close enough that other factors should decide it.

Precision — where brows are won or lost

Eyebrows are all about shape, and this is where threading pulls ahead. A thread can target a single hair at a time, so an artist can follow your natural arch and build a crisp, symmetrical line hair by hair. Wax removes everything it touches within the strip, which is wonderful for large areas but less forgiving on a delicate brow. For sculpting brows specifically, that fine control is exactly why threading is our specialty.

Pain, redness, and irritation

Everyone’s tolerance is different, but both are quick. With threading you feel a light, fast sensation that’s over in minutes and usually leaves only brief pinkness. Waxing can pull at the skin itself, and warm wax may leave the area redder for a bit longer. Neither is unbearable — a gentle technique matters far more than the method.

Best for sensitive skin?

If your skin reacts easily, threading is usually the kinder choice. There’s no heat and no wax or chemicals against your face, so it’s a good fit for sensitive skin and for anyone using retinol or other actives that make waxing risky. That’s a common reason clients switch — and it’s covered in more detail on our FAQ page.

What about cost?

Threading and waxing are priced similarly at most studios, so cost rarely decides it. At our studio, brow threading starts at $15, with upper lip ($6), chin ($6), forehead ($10) and full-face threading ($40) also on the menu. You can see the full list on our Services & Prices page.

So, threading or waxing?

Being fair to both: waxing is fast and great for larger areas, and if you love your results there’s no reason to switch. But for shaping brows — where precision, gentleness, and sensitive skin all matter most — threading tends to win, which is why it’s what we focus on here in downtown Mountain View.
